Visas for domestic workers in private households enable individuals from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland to apply for permission to visit the UK with their employers so they may continue working in their domestic capacity.

Domestic workers can include cleaners, cooks, chauffeurs, personal caregivers and nannies.

Key details for domestic worker:

  • domestic workers in private households are permitted to visit the UK with their employer for up to six months at a time but must leave at the end of the six months or when their employer returns home, whichever is sooner.
  • Individuals under this category are not permitted to bring dependant relatives with them to the UK, and they may not effectively live in the UK for long periods of time through frequent, repeated visits.
  • This visa category does not lead to settlement in the UK
